Do I need a dualboot system to run it?

I heard that you could run vista on an apple at the same time (well - one of them can be put in sleep mode while the other works so it doesn't eat up all those resources). Can you do it the other way around too? (with an XP system for example?)
Ubuntu - depends on whether you like Linux I suppose Don't do it if you're not interested in messing around with your computer, though, and learning new software.

Macintoshes can run Windows XP/Vista natively - as in, as the primary OS. They can also dual-boot Mac OSX and Windows XP/Vista, but it is not 'sleep' mode; at no point are both OSs running at the same time. Parallels is the program that lets you run Windows inside Mac OSX, but it is not as effective as Boot Camp (dual booting).

You cannot legally install Mac OS X on a non-Apple machine; the license explicitly forbids it. It is possible to do, but again isn't for the novice user. (Whether the license restriction would hold up in court is another question of course, but you'll need a team of lawyers to work that out.)

Ubuntu is a nightmare unless you don't mind using the command line. It's still the best Linux, but IMO Linux is still in a Windows 3.1-era of usability. It's fine if all you do is check email, but anything slightly more complex than that opens a big can of worms.

My update icon popped up into the system tray then diappeared. I was curious so I used the link from the autoupdate control panel. Downloaded and installed SP3 saturday morning and no problems so far but no obvious benefits either.

          Aren't we exaggerating a bit?

            No. Not at all.

I had to walk my SO through using Ubuntu the other day for his programming course. He's very computer literate, but he scowled a helluva lot while trying to figure out how to do basic things like changing his password..

The last time I personally used it was a couple years ago, and I had all kinds of problems trying to install any kind of game that wasn't packaged on Ubuntu's servers (and none of those games are any good). Similarly, trying to get my sound working was a futile effort...

I've been using Vista for a couple of days and its been very nice so far. It runs very smoothly on my new hardware. I haven't encountered any major problem yet. For a while, I thought that I might have to buy a new laser printer, since there weren't any Vista drivers for my Lexmark. (But that's Lexmark's fault, not Microsoft's) Fortunately, I found a Samsung driver that works very well (they're basically the same printers).

Mine and a number of computers at work here have had it done through automatic updates.

Hmm, neither my home nor work computer has done it through automatic updates. I wonder if they're rolling it out slowly?

Corporate networks can push it out whenever the company wants to...

The rollout of public update.microsoft.com updates isn't scheduled until June
