Windows XP Service Pack 3 finally arrived to our computers this week… And is now killing AMD machines, according to Jesper Johansson, former program manager for security policy at Microsoft.

The problem relates to machines with SP3 installed rebooting and then not allowing users to get so much as Safe Mode. The problem is mainly affecting AMD users who bought their machines from HP. Johansson attributes the problem to the way that HP puts images of Windows onto its machines, using the same copy for both Intel and AMD boxes.

"Because the image for both Intel and AMD is the same all have the intelppm.sys driver installed and running. That driver provides power management on Intel-based computers. On an AMD-based computer, amdk8.sys provides the same functionality," says Johansson.

Some other OEM’s beside HP have the same practice, and presumably their users will be seeing the same issue.
Well, that would be if anyone used AMD machines anymore... N/M

There's not a way in hell I'm using Vista until businesses do. Until Vista service pack 2 is someday issued. I'm not into beta crap, and I'm not going Vista.
Fogey, I may be, but I'm not going there.

As Asher noted, it's not released yet; that's a beta (RC2, probably) error.

What's scary is the number of complete dumb****s who install the beta SPs. I mean, I don't touch them myself - I prefer to have a computer that works from day to day - as the whole point of the testing is to find all the random incompatibilities that cause BSODs, and they find plenty of them.

They clearly tell you that you will probably have errors and crashes and who knows what, so don't install this unless you know how to deal with this, etc... and yet, people post on their forums "i don't know what to do, it just boots to a bsod, am i going to have to buy a new hard drive and new windows?" ...

        Pure genius...

Equivalently, what's scary is the number of complete dumb****s who buy computers from HP.

When automatic updates installs it... and windows update recommends installing it... doesn't matter what you call it... it's released.

I also downloaded and installed from the Windows Update; it didn't
                    say was a beta.

And yes, I'm a dumb, at least in places where computers knowledge
is the way of evaluating it.

Automatic updates doesn't install it, it won't until next month.

Apparently it was released on May 6th on the website, but you have to explicitly download it.

Is Ubuntu worth it? I'm getting a bit bored with Microsofts crap.
Do I need a dualboot system to run it?

I heard that you could run vista on an apple at the same time (well - one of them can be put in sleep mode while the other works so it doesn't eat up all those resources). Can you do it the other way around too? (with an XP system for example?)

The schedule posted above was the original schedule, certainly not what they actually did. I couldn't find it in a quick perusal of the site last night when I made that post, and it was not what came up if you looked on the main XP update page (still SP2).
