If an Earth type world were discovered orbiting a nearby star, would we go?

It depends on whether they can metabolize our proteins or not. I suspect not, since it is most likely that they will have evolved around a different set of proteins. Even assuming they could, the most dangerous microbes to us are those specially adapted to take advantage of particular structures in our cells. Alien microbes would only be able to do this by shear chance.

No, that is also viruses. But yeah, it does depend on whether whether they can metabolize us, but it appears I find that to be far more likely than you do. I just can't see significant life of the character and on the scale needed to make this world Earth like being all that different fundementally than what we have here.

If I was, it wouldn't include Jennifer Love Hewett.

Meh, it's all I could think of at the time. I don't get the hate though... try posting a better example of mankind's hotness (intelligence and non-annoying personality are irrelevant obviously). In fact, post 100.

Actually, I was surprised to discover that the most dangerous bacteria to us act in similar ways to viruses. They attach themselves to particular parts of our cells and can hijack our cells to turn them into bacteria factories. This is why plague resistance seems to confer HIV resistance.

We have no reason to expect that life would organize the same way on another planet. We have a sample size of one, so we can't draw any inferences from it.

If an astronomer found an alien earth like planet he wouldn't know if there was a civilization there, but he might know the gasses in the atmosphere based on spectrum echos of lightwave signature. So we might better bring some weaponry, like a few tanks to deal with the locals. Could be anything, dinos or skull sucking locust aliens.

It's not an either or situation.

You mean load a bunch of today's uneducated youth on the huge, highly explosive space ship and try to smarten them up on the trip?

Given the options, yes, it is an eithre or situation.
You think I just pulled my answer out of my ass?

Are you speaking of the bio-sphere experiments? IIRC, the experiments were corrupted by stuff being smuggled in. Even if not, a system like that would be the size of a few city blocks -- and that's without the re-entry capsule.

Bottom line: We'll go, but not in the near future. We need to take a crack a colonizing Mars first, and that will be no picnic.
