Well at least you're upfront about it. Unlike some US big-name media viewpoints that claim to be "fair and balanced"

Hey LS, maybe you could clear something up for me.

I've heard India (and that includes Pakistan and Bangladesh) referred to as "South Asia" and "the Indian subcontinent" by the U.S. media.

However in Britain the term "Asian" generally means Indian (including Pakistani and Bangladeshi) person rather than Chinese, Japanese, Mongolians, etc.

            What's the usage in India?

That's a good question. I guess there isn't teh same necessity for a catch-all term for India + neighbours (like how USians wouldn't call themselves North Americans).

Teh regional association, though, is called SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Conflict Cooperation).

Most people I know wouldn't refer to Indians as Asians as that term has already been taken by east Asians. Indians (and neighboring states which share similar culture and history) are referred to as South Asians or more often by their nationality while the region is called the Indian subcontinent. I suspect since the British have a much larger history in India then the rest of Asia that is why they refer to Indians as Asians; America is the exact opposite for the same reasons.

Until very recently the only mass exposure to Asia Americans had was through wars in Japan, Korea, IndoChina, or (in the 20's & 30's) in China. I suppose if you go back 100 years you could throw the Philippine Insurrection into that mix.
