    Where the hell does all this come from?

    Where does this Russia/USSR = Asia bullcrap come from?

    Right now there's this snippet of brilliance on IGN:
    Panzer Command: Kharkov Review
    Ever get involved in a land war in Asia?

    Come on, the Nazis haven't crossed the Urals, Kharkov is in the goddamn Ukraine, which is 100% European.

    In his Pattern Recognition book, William Gibson always mentions prominent cheekbones as a trademark Slavic feature. For several days I've been looking at people's cheekbones while commuting, and I have no idea what he was writing about. Mongoloid people do have large cheekbones which flatten the general appearance of their face but it is not a Slavic facial feature.

    And in the, um, Story of O, the author explicity describes the Russian character as having Mongoloid features. WTF?

    Does anyone know who the hell has started this ridiculous trend?

          I totally agree its silly. I haven't seen large cheekbones around here either.


          I think it more or less stems from Nazi and US propaganda. Both tried to make Slavs ("teh enemy") seem asiatic to appeal to racist sentiments to help their fight against them.

            I know Nazis thought of Slavs as "sub-human" and tried to portray them as bolshevik hordes from Asia but when was that ever the case for US propaganda? Sure maybe Russians were portrayed as godless communists during the Cold War but they were never considered untermenschen.

                  Yes but they were portrayed as "Asiatic". Also many Eastern Euros are Slavs, so any Eastern Euro steretoypes became associated with Slavs as well.
