  • Obama: No more debates before May 6th

    The New York Times

ANDERSON, Ind. – Pining for another Democratic presidential debate?

If so, it’s not going to happen before the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on May 6.

That’s the word from Senator Barack Obama, who said in an interview to be broadcast tomorrow on “Fox News Sunday” that he had no plans of agreeing to another debate in the next 10 days with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. After that, aides say, it remains an open question.

Here is a brief excerpt of the interview with Chris Wallace, which was conducted today during a break in Mr. Obama’s campaign schedule in Indiana.

Mr. Wallace: “Why are you ducking another debate with Senator Clinton?”

Mr. Obama: “I’m not ducking one. We’ve had 21. And so what we’ve said, we’re two weeks, two big states, we want to make sure we’re talking to as many folks possible on the ground taking questions from voters, you know we will -

Mr. Wallace: “No debates between now and Indiana?”

Mr. Obama “We’re not going to have debates between now and Indiana.”

Well, that settles it. Stay tuned for comment from the Clinton campaign.

Good on him. The ABC debate, the one moderated by a former Clinton staffer, is pretty much proof we are not going to get anything of substance out these debates.

Now, I'd like to see a written debate. With candidates locked up in a room so we know they wrote the answers.

Makes sense, both from the point of view that there's little left to be said, and that he would not want to harpoon his chances to win both states.

I'd like to see some Lincoln-Douglas-style action, with the two of them standing and sweating in the sun for eight hours straight and having to really start thinking when their grab-bags of trite sound-bytes get empty. That's how debates oughta be.
      Unbelievable!

The Gibson/Step debate actually had some good moments 'specially Obama advocating for increasing capital gains taxes not for increasing governmental revenues (prolly would actually decrease governmental revenues) but for reasons of 'fairness'.

That's a really interesting issue right now - Capital gains taxes, up or not (or even down). The difference between fairness (as CG are generally only made by the rich, and are generally 'extra' income not needed to live) and economics (as encouraging investment is crucial to the economy, and during an economic downturn any increase in CG taxes will cause a lot of money to leave the investment pool).

More than likely the answer is to raise them, but not quite yet. Raise them once the economy has turned around (and not JUST after it has, but when it's back on the upswing or even into bubble territory) and enough to permanently shift the CG tax rate (so that you can lower it again later, when needed for economic reasons, and still be well above current levels).

Unfortunately, this is a relatively complex economic argument, and not one that will ever make it into the mainstream debate... thus it becomes 'rich versus poor' instead of the economic debate it needs to be.

Can't you just get on with the election already? It's been going on for far longer than it should've been!

Well, if rumors of Clinton being tapped out financially are true, it's in her interest to have debates(free face time, bull**** media style over substance questions) and it's in Obama's interest to watch her flail about without much cash left for the campaign.

What actually was wrong with those press conferences anyway?

I really couldn't give two ****s about Rev. Wright and his relation to Obama. It's different with Hillary, who lies and lies and gets a pass on it from the press(except FOX, but I don't really consider them "the press').

It's a difference of what a person personally says or does, and what some associates say and do.

We obviously watch completely different media if you believe it is Hillary that gets the pass from the press.

Re Wright, Ayers, Rezco, etc.: All those go to issues of character and would seem to be at least in my view legit topics to press him on.

No, since we don't know who the candidates are yet. Obviously.

Of course he doesn't want anymore debates. He is much stronger with a teleprompter and prepared speech and he has more to lose by looking poorly at a debate.
