I remember reading about downsizing cities in post-unification East Germany. They do literally the same things as Youngstown: tear down apartment blocks, even replace water and sewer utilities with tubes of smaller diameter.

Put your hands up for Detroit! I love this city!
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I'm across the river from Detroit once every couple weeks or so. Just viewing the city from afar makes me feel unclean and in need of a shower.

Actually, I've heard that some parts of the city are experiencing a renaissance, but that the suburbs are getting hit especially hard lately. I've never been to Detroit, so can't confirm or deny.

You eventually get so bad that any change is seen as an improvement.

I've never understood why so many people from the Arab world have decided to move to Detroit. It's a crap hole.

Not since around 1991. My aunt and uncle used to live there but moved away in the early 90's. Like most white people they abandoned the city.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

From pictures Detroit seems to be treasurecove of art deco architecture. Strange the place isn't able to capitalise on it.

How are they supposed to do that given all the other problems they've had (and continue to have)?
