I read the article. Is that your source for their supposedly calling themselves "fundamental Mormons?" The only ones calling them that in that article would be the Reuters writers.

(Can you say "Reuters writers" ten times fast?)

No it isn't the only source. Just Google Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). They're a well known group which goes way back. Essentially they're the Mormons who didn't want to give up on polygamy.

People call them Fundamental Mormons to diferentiate them from regular Mormons but they're still, for all intents, Mormons.

The LDS church is progressive, meaning that it lives in the current day. It always has, from the very beginning. In contrast, the FLDS are regressive, meaning that they follow standards no longer acceptable, such as: marrying girls at a young age, dressing in clothing from the 1850's, keeping the mindset that women are submissive to men, living in isolation from the outside world, etc.

These are all things that the LDS church does not agree with in any way. Also, over the years of separation many changes have occurred within the FLDS organization. Key principles and beliefs have been altered or skewed in such a way that when you get into it, it's not even recognizable as a "Mormon" church.

One key difference between the two religions is the treatment of women. The LDS church's Relief Society is one of the world's oldest and largest women's philanthropic organizations, if not the oldest and largest. Women are held in the greatest regard. By contrast, in the FLDS church women are degraded, forced to marry against their wills, abused, submissive to men, etc.

I don't know about you, but I consider this a MAJOR difference.

No one has claimed they FLDS represents the LDS.

You were whining that people calling them Mormons when in fact "Fundamental Mormon" is the correct official name. I referred to them as a Mormon sect which is factual and correct.

This I know. However, since the term "Mormon" is a nickname specifically for members of the original Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and since the original founders of the FLDS were excommunicated back in the day for their diversion from mainstream LDS doctrines, and since most if not all of these modern FLDS have never been LDS, it is inappropriate to call them Mormon.

The correct term is "polygamous sect" or FLDS. There is no such thing as a "Mormon sect" just like there is no such thing as a "Catholic sect." You disagree with official church doctrine and you're out.

The media's been trying to force the FLDS on us ever since Romney began running for president.

The term "Mormon" also applies especially to people who believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

Read Jacob Chapter 2 from the Book of Mormon and tell me that the FLDS believe and practice that.

Rather, I think you'll find they have that scripture highlighted with their black sharpie highlighter pen.

Wrong comparison. It's more like this:

The Catholic Church claims that it's the one true Christian faith. The Protestants break away from the Catholic Church. Are they still Christian? Of course they are.

Now, for "Catholic Church" substitute LDS; for "Protestants" substitute "FLDS"; for "Christian" substitute "Mormon." And there you go.

LDS is a brand name. "Mormon" is the generic for people who believe that the Book of Mormon is inspired text.

The FLDS is the Pepsi to the LDS' Coke, but they're both colas.

Um... for "Christian" substitute "Christian"... because LDS (and FLDS) are Christian sects.

As much as I dislike a lot of things about the LDS I wouldn't try to hang the FLDS on them and I don't think other rational people are either. But you're both Mormons.
