              Religion is bad mkay.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

Wow! Just discovered this thread. My congrats to Blake, wherever he may be.
(Even if he is on a secret assignment with Firaxis! )

Religion may be bad, but EVERYONE has their belief systems, whether it be "organized" as a religion or not. At least Blake is with a religion that recognizes that everyone is different (and has a RIGHT to be). Unlike some in the almost-theocracy of USA.

How can you "discover" it just now? It was probably on OT page 500 until you revived it!

Because it was referenced in another thread, where someone was wondering about Blake. I hadn't been in the OT forum in several months.

Do you know what a theocracy is? Let me help you out, since all those burritos you choke on have evidently cut off air flow to the brain: theocracies have no separation between church and state and are governed entirely by religious institutions and codes. What religion allows gay marriage, the death penalty, and abortion, numb nuts? What theocracy leaves these decisions up to the people rather than a religious authority figure? Were you at a party as a kid when someone took a swing at a pinata but accidentally bashed you in the head? OH MAMACITA!

Don't ever return to these forums.

                      • Well, i was the one asking in the other thread...

I, at least, would be happy to read up on Blake´s experiences as a monk, and think it would be really nice of him, to give us like a monthly or maybe quarter-annual one-or-two page report on it, if he cares... (and change his avatar into a priest-specalist)

                            • hey no fair, he stole my thunder.

Well I found peace and I didn't have to convert to a monk.

As has been my motto, I can find fulfillment and moral values in life without religion. It irritates me people believe you have to be religious to have moral values or peace. I am proof you do not have to be religious.

Not to say religion is bad for everyone. Just bad for me as I don't like being told what to believe. But if it's something you enjoy, more power to you.

                              peace

                              • I covered a story once where a teenage boy in the community went to live in a Buddhist temple and shaved his head to be a novice monk. It was pretty cool - he was there for two weeks and took part in all the activities they did.

They only ate in the morning and noon, and after 12 pm they didn't eat anything for the rest of the day. There was a rota of layman neighbors who cooked for them as volunteers, but sometimes if the volunteer network couldn't stretch to a particular day, the monks might order in, and have pizza or something similar. Back in Cambodia, Thailand, or Vietnam, the monks would be deeply respected by all and they would be able to beg for their food door to door, getting a bit of rice here and there. Of course, in America there isn't that social institution and so they rely on a different dynamic.

The monks where all Southeast Asian in origin and few spoke English, which meant they had interesting challenges in teaching the boy (who was an American), but they all got along just fine.

Apparently the youngest monk was very computer-savvy and he set up their website, which was fairly sophisticated. Every so often he would go to Best Buy to get software and hardware, but because the monks didn't drive, a volunteer would take them. Once or twice they'd ride a motorcycle, and it's pretty quirky to see a saffron-robed monk wearing a motorcycle helmet and riding behind some guy on the highway.

All interesting signs of how faith survives and adapts in the 21st century.
