I have spent over 20 years in the Army (the last 5 years with the Special Forces).
I originally joined the Army at the age of 17 to try and escape my sexuality (growing-up in a small town in northeastern Ohio didn't help either).
But in reality, the Army brought me out and forced me to realize who I really was. Of course, I had to live a double-life. Survival of the fittest after all.
During my military career, I have personally known/met Generals, Colonels, Lt. Colonels, Majors, Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeant Majors, and a plethora of other less ranking service men and women - all who were gay.
The point is this: Our government wants us to believe that military life is unsuitable for homosexuals. This is absolute bullsh!t.
Gays have been with the military throughout history, and they will be there in the future as well - and they will continue to fight for our country right along side of their heterosexual servicemembers (even it those heterosexual servicemembers don't know of their buddy's sexuality). In the end, it really does not matter. The military is the military - made-up of a diverse grouping of people.

I am tanked here in my misery thread, alternating between Apolyton and sending emails to this horrible woman, but you will still be no match for me MR WITTLICH.
No one says gays can't fight. The problem is that if they're out of the closet, then numerous problems develop, namely bullying and perhaps they will be hit on during combat or in an important situation. The tank commander might not want his gay crush to go into harm's way, jeopardizing national security and for what? A fling, a gay fling in the desert.Comment

Your reasoning is broken. By this viewpoint, women should not be able to serve either...since a (heterosexual) affair can get in the way to the mission's accomplishment.
What I am saying that it is not about homosexuality or heterosexuality. It is about the mission at hand.
I have to wonder, so corporations (for example Chevron) who embrace their homosexual workers are doomed to failure due to men screwing men and women screwing women on the assembly-line?!? Please.
The Military is, for the most part, like a company - they are paid to do a mission. And the mission is always FIRST.
Your justification: The tank commander might not want his gay crush to go into harm's way, jeopardizing national security and for what? A fling, a gay fling in the desert seriously smacks of sexual discrimination. You really need to open your eyes to the rest of the world.

Yes but on the assembly line there is not a life or death situation. I have had crushes before and I would not want to kill them, and they can be distracting, and in this situation I don't think I should be commanding them. The army should try to limit this.Originally posted by Wittlich

Now you are kind of right. There must be a better reason, so here's the backup argument, the big one. The army is about machismo, being a tough masculine guy [gays tend to not be this am I right], and when you undermine this, other troops may get upset and bully or harass the homosexual. This accomplishes nothing and to avoid this, we need to keep them in the closet for the purposes of the mission. Since they do not need to be openly gay to do their job anyway.

WRONG! There are plenty of tough masculine machismo gay men that I know and have known - especially within the military. Trust me, the Nelly queens / effeminates only make up a small portion of the gay population as a whole (you've been watching too much TV)...but I understand your confusion. For some damned reason, the media has adopted this type of person as our poster child.
Maybe it's because there is more to work with as far as humour goes...I don't know.

There are REGULATIONS. Any bullying, harassment, etc. should not be tolerated. We had this same situation with the integration of African-Americans in the military and later, with the integration of women in the military. We over came those obstacles, we can over come this one as well.

Trust me, heterosexuals are OPEN in their heterosexuality during every waking moment of their job...and what? The sky doesn't fall, the earth doesn't stop rotating, our country does not cease to exist...
So I have a simple question: Why can't we live our lives open and as free as well?
... or are we in-fact, second-class citizens?!?

How does he know that without being part of that culture? That is the only thing I can notice in this whole situation is that he got rejected by a woman, perhaps because he saw that he actually had no feelings for her. You are right that gays can be macho. And that women pose a problem for military order. And that heteros do not need to announce their sexuality either.
But don't you think that public displays of homosexuality might invite sexual politics back at base and in the field that have absolutely no place in the army? Regulations are one thing...reality is another. And racism, and sexism have been overcome, but these are psychological problems -- sexual attraction is innate in everyone, and will never go away or be 'overcome.'Comment
