Facts about teen pregnancy (including which states have highest teen pregnancy rates): http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/2006/09/12/USTPstats.pdf Those kids in the bible belt sure do like to get knocked up young.

Shows rates of all states, apparently California is part of the Bible Belt, it is ranked 7th in the nation in teen pregnancy, and 5th in abortion rate.

Meanwhile Texas is 5th in teen pregnancy, but 26 in the abortion rate.

    ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

So if the Freakonomics guys are right, Texas is going to have a significantly worse crime rate in 20 years, when all of its unwanted kids hit adulthood.

          Oerdin, get a life.

Yes, I'm just being a contrarian today. That said, I would expect Utah to be in a different position b/c of demographic realities.

Btw, the atheist heathen city I live in has a homicide rate of 1.7 which makes it even better than religious Utah. Just don't get the idea to bring your murderous religious tendancies here.

More than that. That is 1.7 per 100K (1.8 in the cesspool of crime you live in).

Now I can understand why the regions which refuse to teach real sex education have the highest teen pregnancy rates and the highest STD rates but why do Evangelicals have the highest divorce rates when they're always preaching about the sanctity of marriage? Also I believe the Bible tells us one of the ten commandments is "Thou shalt not kill" but clearly the Bible Belt leads the way in murders. There is more then a bit of hypocracy here; hypocracy mixed with political policy failure.

                      This is just stupid.

                      1. Just because someone says they are an Evangelical Christian over the phone doesn't mean that they are deeply religious. Also, one of your sources shows Evangelical with a divorce rate of 36% (the number is probably much lower among true Evangelicals), which is lower than average.

                      2. On the other things you mention, there is such thing as a non-Evangelical Southerner. Much of the South has high poverty rates, which regions with high poverty rates tend to have higher crime rates, teen pregnacy rates, and STD rates. Just because you see that high crime, teen pregnacy, and STD rates and high devout christian percents in the same region doesn't mean that statistics are related. Take a place that is also very devout, but doesn't have the same high poverty rates, such as Utah and many of the other mountian states and much of the Great Plains, there are low crime, teen pregnancy, and low STD rates.

Re the difference in divorce rates. I would guess it is in large part based on marriage rates. What are the marriage rates in bible thumping pro-family states? Higher, I would guess.

Yes, I could see that. Kids want to get laid but feel forced to marry due to religious outlook. Then a few years later realize that getting married at 18 to the first girl who comes along might not have been a good idea.

So now people who profess their religion to be Evangelical Christians "aren't really Evangelicals". I'm betting that people are the best qualified to say what their religion is even if other people don't like the results.

Surely high levels of teen pregnancy is a given for evangelical christians, after all married at 17, pregnant at 17 1/2 and again at 19 gives gives 2 teenage pregnancies within wedlock, exactly as they are taught to do. Also the lower abortion rate would raise the teenage birth rate.
