No opinions on the McCain question? Or is it just too unfitting for this thread?

Yes, because the VP can become a president if another bookstore facility accident happens.

I'm afraid it isn't that simple. The US system includes mechanisms for the ase that someone in the "line of succession" is not eligible, such as for being foreign-born. It might not have been the case for vice presidents, but former secretary of state Madeleine Albright was one such case. By office, she'd have been #4 in the line of succession, by birth was omitted from the line.

That said, I just checked wiki and it says the VP has the same eligibility issues as the P.

            Indeed.

No, I don't know the Republican field well enough. I suspect who ever McCain gets will be someone who can fill weaknesses in his own resume. That means he'll probably be a religious nutjob from the upper south and he'll be a lot younger (since McCain is in his 70's). McCain needs help with Christian conservatives.

On March 6, the IHT talked about McCain's running mate a bit:

John McCain, the Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee, praised Governor Charlie Crist of Florida, a potential running mate, as they campaigned together Thursday, although he sidestepped questions about a vice presidential choice.

Crist, 51, is among more than a half-dozen politicians mentioned as a potential running mate. His last-minute endorsement of McCain is credited with helping McCain win the pivotal Florida primary election on Jan. 29. He won election last year to serve as governor of Florida, a state that will be a battleground in the November general election.

Also being talked about as possible running mates for McCain are Governors Mark Sanford of South Carolina, Sarah Palin of Alaska, Jon Huntsman Jr. of Utah, Haley Barbour of Mississippi and Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota.

I think Crist and Sanford are in the drivers' seat right now for the Veep nomination. Pawlenty is an interesting name as well.

Crist is actually an interesting one. While strongly pro-life and against gay rights (which the religious right will love), he's a strong environmentalist, and very popular with African-American citizens. From the wiki article on him:

Democratic Representative Terry Fields of Jacksonville, Florida referred to Crist as the state's "first black governor", saying, "Charlie Crist has been a friend to the African-American community even before he became governor".

He is the first Republican governor to accept the state's NAACP invitation to a convention and endorsed legislation requiring paper records of all ballots cast during an election, stemming from criticisms in black communities that believed they were being undercounted by computerized voting machines.

Which may be considered quite an asset, especially when running against Barack Obama.

Given the importance of Florida, I would find it odd if it were anybody but Crist at this point...unless his vetting reveals something.

The only downside I can see right now to Crist was that he's been divorced since 1980 (after one year of marriage), and there have been rumors that he may be gay.

I think McCain is more worried about getting the traditional Republican base of the evangelical right to show up and vote then he is worrying about getting blacks to vote for him. My guess is he'll get some raving lunatic fringe evangelical to run with him. Maybe Huckabee.

Evangelicals have the highest divorce rate and even their pseudo god Reagan had multiple divorces. They talk a good talk about hating divorces but the reality is they really don't care.

As much as I think it would be a good choice, I don't really think it is a serious possibility given how serious he is about governing the state atm. I'm sure it is nice for him to be thought of in those terms though.

I'm seeing you are up to you old tricks of only reading half of the posts you quote.

You missed the part where he's been divorced for 28 years (Reagan was remarried by the time he ran for President)! No one said that a divorce would matter, but not being married for 28 years after a one year marriage starts to raise questions. And there is massive speculation that he may be gay.

Then he's out of the running. Evangelicals don't mind divorces but they hate the icky homo-gays.
