Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

However, the EU's Slovenian presidency said the 27-nation bloc had not yet agreed on a joint declaration, although a presidency statement -- which carries less political weight than summit conclusions -- might be issued in the next three days.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said consultations were under way on a statement that would "urge the Chinese government to address the concerns of Tibetans with regard to issues of human rights" and call for dialogue between Beijing and Tibetan representatives.

I wonder how far each side is willing to go.

The Chinese government will probably keep the force used at a moderate level, and might just try to blocaked and squeeze the protests withouth needing to get too violent because of the Olympics, but I don't think that they will bend too far, and if they think the protests might get really serious, I think the Chinese leadership might just say "screw it" and crack down hard.

And how far will we go? Statements of our "concern"? Pull a diplomat or two?

What do you think will have an effect?

Hey! I'm asking the questions here!!

j/k, I don't think anything we are prepared to do would have an effect in stopping/preventing China from continuing to assimilate Tibet. Hence my sarcasm. As I said earlier we will voice our concerns but we decided a long time ago that trade trumps rights wrt China. There's just too much money to be made.

China has us by the scrotum. Anything we could do to make them sit up and take notice would come back to hurt us.

You overestimate China's hold on the US. The real issue is what the US has to gain or lose from intervention. And there is no gain.

Plus if we were going to do anything to China ever, it would have been when they were holding Americans hostage.

As soon as a few million Chinese move in and be acting all like they own the place and deserve all the jobs and can buy what they want cuz they have all the money and suddenly Tibet looks like . . .

Taking effective measures would hurt all parties. I agree.

Instead of Free Tibet, you should say, Self-Determination for Tibet. Maybe Tibet doesn't want to be independent.
