  • I am exactly like Helen Keller

I am colorblind and was told I could not go armor (tanks) in the army. Well, I was just told a couple days ago I will be in charge of a tank platoon. See, exactly like Helen Keller.

And we wonder how the US military can have so many incidents of friendly fire.

A friend of mine had an epileptic attack. Shortly thereafter, the Army sent him to Iraq and made him a driver.

I thankfully don't need to be in the military. My diabetes saved me from that.

I did 6 months of military service in the Finnish coastal forces last year and the whole time I was wondering whether the whole thing was a bad joke or should be taken seriously to some degree...

            1) the formal organization was completely out of the 19th century, with rigid hierarchies and procedures that nobody actually cared about and that seemed to be invoked totally at random, especially towards the end of the period.
            2) the "soldiers" were mostly immature kids around 19 years of age and the whole place seemed more like a pre-school than what one could think of as a "military" organization. Yet, these guys are trusted with automatic rifles and (occasionally) live ammunition.
            3) the discipline was formally based on collective punishment, humiliation and the old Prussian ideal of soldiers fearing their superiors more than the enemy - but Finland being a 21st century Western country kind of ridiculously undermines this idea. For example, bullying by superiors is heavily punished. One of our superiors, a 20-year-old fellow, I think, called a guy from the platoon a "******" and another a "lazy piece of ****" and lost most of his 2-week Christmas vacation.
            etc...

Now the Russians know about our weakness and will probably attack but I don't care.

Aivo, that's because Sweden hasn't had a war since the 19th century. Well make that Finland, and your only opponent was Russia / Uncle Joe before the Germans came so that wasn't a real enemy either.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Well, what Aivo says is a real problem. These days, they're so afraid by being teared a new a-hole by tabloids. I mean, the things I said or did, by those standards? I'd prolly be in prison today.

Even when folks broke the rules that by our rules constituted a group punishment, like some exercize, tehre was always some smartass saying they will call their lawyer, or someone's dad was in the staff... ok you can say that. But when the next possibility to shovel poo from our camp ****teries is available, I know who is going to volunteer for it And again... and again... and again. At some point they'll stop with the lawyer crap.
