I wouldn't be surprised if a greater proportion of astronauts died than soldiers in Iraq.

And you'd be correct; it's 5% vs. 0.2%. Even if we were to include the proportion of civilians killed in the violence, it'd come to 5% vs. 0.6% or 5% vs. 3.8% depending on which body count you believe.

      NASA murderers

Space accidents, either during operations or training for spaceflights, have killed 22 astronauts (five percent of all people who have been in space, two percent of individual spaceflights), and a much larger number of ground crew.

Wow...that's a relief. Thinking that Iraq might have been as dangerous as strapping yourself to several tons of highly flamable material and then setting it off was keeping me up nights.

Unlike Iraq every singel death in the space program has resulted in some improvments of NASA's way of doing things.

Imagine if the same could be said of Iraq.

Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

Well, I don't believe that concern for the NASA things really played any vital role in the decision to enter Iraq.
