TORONTO -- A massive winter storm that is threatening to bury southern Ontario under at least 30 centimetres of snow will likely head east and stymie travel plans throughout Quebec and the Maritimes as well.
Environment Canada senior meteorologist Ria Alsen says the storm is already causing problems in Ontario and will likely complicate travel plans for snowbirds eager to escape for March break.
A winter storm warning is in effect for the province and it's predicted several cities will be hit with at least 30 centimetres of snow.
Alsen said the accumulation will be highest in the eastern part of the province, which could find itself buried under more than 40 centimetres.
Toronto's Pearson Airport had cancelled 50 arrivals and 50 departures until late Saturday afternoon.
Montreal's Trudeau Airport had cancelled at least three dozen arrivals and a similar number of departures until early Saturday evening.
While Alsen could not predict precise air and road conditions, she said the heavy accumulations will make travelling difficult across eastern Canada.
"Any kind of travel will be slow. By car, by plane, anything," Alsen said. "So patience is good."
Alsen called the storm system "massive" and said it spans the southern half of Ontario from Windsor to Ottawa.
But other provinces will soon feel the effects as the American system as it continues to move along a "direct path" to eastern Canada.
"One favoured track is for the lows to just march up along the east side of the Appalachians, and that's what this one is trying to do," she said.
Throughout the weekend, residents of Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia can expect to see heavy snowfalls as well as freezing rain in some regions.
She predicted residents in northern New Brunswick may be digging out from about 20 centimetres of snow.
"I hope people are paying attention to the weather conditions," Alsen said.
"If people don't have to go out, it's best to stay home."
We got the last batch cleared away so we're ready for more.

My fear is that in two years when the Olympics are here that something freakish like a snowfall will happen. Even a couple centimeters brings the whole city to a standstill.
I live on the west side - far away from dangerous electrical discharges.

I'm working from home today. And yesterday.
It's only 'cause I've got nothing to do so it's easier to play games while getting paid. Also, need to pack and all that for my vacation...leave first thing tomorrow morning, weather-permitting.

My client in Seattle just cancelled our teleconference today because their offices are closed due to weather. Heck, I emailed them all the relevant documents, so I don't see why we can't move forward. Telecommunication still works, but I guess they're not comfortable unless everyone's huddled around the same Polycon unit.
Oh well, now I can take time to dig out my car. We had a pretty decent storm last night, though not as bad as predicted. Most area schools shut down preemptively with announcements last night, since it was the last day before holidays anyway.
Have a great time on your annual return to the homeland, Asher.

i have to drive a lot today though so i'd like to it please not snow as much, or for the plows to do a better job with the roads.
butttt because of the snow my sister's flight home last night was canceled so i don't have to see her until tomorrow since i won't be home when she gets here today and she'll be asleep when i get home after midnight.

I presume you are flying out of Pearson?
Good luck with that.
