  • Help DinoDoc choose a paper topic

I have a paper to do in a class on Contemporary Terrorism class. I can choose any terrorist group I want to cover as long as I am adequately able to cover their history. But that's where the problem starts because I'm kinda spoiled for choice wrt terrorist groups and I'm also wanting to avoid AQ if I can help it. So I'm turning to you to help me come up with a topic. Which terrorist group do you find the most interesting?

Seriously, how contemporary do they have to be, does that mean still active?

No. Active at any point since the 60's would suffice I imagine, so long as I can research them easily.

I can't really recommend a group, but I would probably choose one from which I personally don't know that much, like ETA or so. Those who are in the media all the time could be rather boring (but otoh easier to do, esp. when you're already familiar with them).

            My 0.5 cents.

Think domestic terrorism, and you'll have a gold mine.

                On the left:
                E.L.F.
                Some factions of P.E.T.A.

                On the right:
There's the good ol' KKK (esp. if you allowed to go back into the 60's)

I forget the name of the radical anti-tax folks here in Cali., but when the law tried to deal with them, they would file liens against the police, the D.A., the judges, whatever, then file a Notice of Forgiveness on the lien, and finally report their victim to the IRS for failing to list the Forgiveness as income.

And of course, any street gang, which rules its territory by terrorizing their neighbors.

Teh thing with teh LTTE is that it's probably one of teh largest terrorist organisations evar, with a wealth of information available on teh internets, yet many in teh West aren't very familiar with it. It pioneered teh suicide bomb. Its cause is just, but means are not. Also, in discussing teh SL government's response, you'll get to point out teh morbidly amusing phenomenon of devout, conservative Buddhists baying for blood.

Islamic groups are a dime a dozen, as are commie groups, and most of your classmates are probably going to focus on those.

FARC is a good one. Lots of contemporary actions. Bleed-through to an insurgency. Drug profits. Venezuela angle. American funding of counterinsurgency.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
