  • Iran's nuclear weapons program was never halted says IAEA.

The IAEA is now believes that the Islamic Republic of Iran has never halted its nuclear weapons program despite the the US Intellegence estimate that the program had been suspended in 2003.

    Not good news I'm afraid.

    Iran weapons project 'continued'
The UN's nuclear watchdog has been told Iran may have continued secret work on nuclear weapons after 2003, the date US intelligence suggested the work ceased.

A US National Intelligence Estimate released last December said Tehran had frozen its atomic programme in 2003.

But documents presented to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) suggest the work continued.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's ambassador to the IAEA, angrily dismissed the documentats as "forgeries".

Simon Smith, Britain's ambassador to the IAEA, said material presented to the IAEA in Vienna came from multiple sources and included designs for a nuclear warhead, plus information on how it would perform and how it would fit onto a missile.

"Certainly some of the dates that we were talking about... went beyond 2003," he said.

    No credible assurances

The material was presented to the agency's 35-nation board by the IAEA's head of safeguards, Olli Heinonen, in a closed-door meeting on Monday.

The permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, UK, China, France and Russia - are meeting in Washington to discuss the possibility of imposing further sanctions on Iran over its disputed atomic programme.

The IAEA released a report on Friday which said Iran was being more transparent, but had not given "credible assurances" that it was not building a bomb.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that report bolstered a "very strong case" for a third round of sanctions over the disputed nuclear programme.

But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad retorted that no amount of UN sanctions would deter Tehran from its nuclear path.

"If they want to continue with that path of sanctions, we will not be harmed. They can issue resolutions for 100 years," he said in a televised interview on Saturday.

Tehran insists its programme is aimed purely at generating electricity.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice... well the point is I won't get fooled again.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

Good. Hopefully, they'll have nukes very soon and the US will stop with the sabre-rattling. With any luck, the next US President will understand nuclear deterrent and MAD as well as the Iranians do.

I hope he understands it a bit better than they seem to.

I hope now that the NIE seems to be discredited we can get back to the process of installing real sanctions on the regime instead of wrist slaps.

Does anyone want to risk a prediction how the entire Iran thing will play out? Military action seems hardly an option right now, otoh this means we just have to live with them getting nukes in the end? Do we get some cold war style confrontation over several decades?

Well in my expert opinion (10 years as a US diplomat in Iran/ 5 years as army commando part of an anti-Iranian task force/ 2 years as brain surgeon), Zoroastrianism will have a sudden resurgence within the nation. Conflict with neighboring Islamic states and belief in the "holy fire" will inevitably lead to the use of nuclear weapons against Mecca and Medina.

A massive 100 year holy war will commence in the middle east with the Fremen led by Paul Mua'dib as the ultimate victors.

Why not? Nobody has taken it off the table.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

He doesn't have that much real power, though. Certainly not enough to take his statements to mean anything. It's what Khameni says that counts.

This is, unfortunately, a Goodwin but in the 1930's most of the foreign policy experts in the west all thought Hitler couldn't possibly mean what he said about Jews and Slavs. Maybe Ahmadinejad also means what he says.

Doesn't exactly matter if he means what he says, since he doesn't have the authority to carry it out. The President of Iran has relatively little power.

Also, Iran has relatively little power compared to pre-WWII Germany. The comparison just doesn't hold.
