Yeah, I mean... you need different things for different occasions. now that I have to go on bunch of occasions all the time, I need more. For example, at work, I have to dress little down from suits, but that's actualyl the most difficult part of dressing. To not put on a suit, yet something that is equal. Also, when I see clients or talk to people, I have to have that suit, but it has to be smart, yet not executive smart. I should not over dress my opponents, yet I need to remain smart.
What you don't want to do is mimic the horrible dressing of most speakers here. You dress for the audience, period. Know the audience, if my audience has like officers, cops, maybe few consultants, perhaps few CSOs? I know how to dress then, it's black suit time with good cuts, good white shirt or I can have other colours as well with the shirt but forget the pink... even though I have this cool pink shirt and tie, but it's for something else. Avoid blue then, in fact just avoid blue, don't go with that too slim cut, don't put on cuffs either. Hair? Conservative. It's easy for me because my hair is usually always SHORT. Jacket? Open. Do not button it or unbutton it before you start to speak. Never put your hands in your pockets. That's no class. Use your hands as much as possible but don't be ADHD, walk a bit. It's OK to look down and just work your brain a bit in silence, especialyl if you walk a lot. The issue is that what I say is usually lots of critique towards current practices, I'm challenging and basically badmouthing in a polite way about hte things that are now done, and they're done by the people in my audience. OK? Since I'm not Bill Gates, I have to use all the advantages I have for them to listen and to consider what I'm saying. If I go there wearing my track suit, wtf? They're already feeling a bit insecure as I talk about things, like "many people think...... and it's a huge mistake, in fact it makes everything worse." So not only will they have to struggle to not be insulted, I'm a young man, they've done it for decades... and trust is absolute, it's security stuff, so it's not like I can just say anything I want. It's important to me and the audience. So hells yeah I need to dress the part. Especially when most don't dress the part, I get more credibility by just showing effort and being smart about it. That also makes me approachable, I also notice that it really multiplies the number of business cards recieved and offers. They don't necessarily understand all you're saying, but they can see you know what you're talking about. Why risk that by dressing badly? Besides, I don't want to look like your typical IT researcher. That's horrible. You know? No one wants to hire them for certain positions. They might be smart, but they aren't marketable. I am marketable, so if our issues are on the same level, I'll pass the other one with the image.
If you talk to officials, use the word agenda, if you talk to students, use the word introduction or layout, even though they all mean different things in reality. Oh, also, NEVER go with red tie if you're all back and white, unless you have good collars. It looks horrible if you have small collars and a red tie, small collars and tight cuts should only go with black ties, plus red tie white shirt is either executive or politician, except on few occasiosn on people who can pull it off, I can't.
If you're talking to consultants only, take of your jacket. Colour of the shirt, anything BUT white. Green is cool. Light blue is cool. You can do it without a tie as well. And always pay attention to sleeves. you're not supposed to cover yourself in the jacket. With consultants or students, you can put one hand in the pocket momentarily if you want to, move even more.
So basically what I'ms aying is, you dress for the audience. And it's a big deal, there's big differences in different styles, even if just small ones. But they make all the difference. You dont' want to say that "I'm like this". you want to say "I'm really likeable and I knwo where you come from and I'm talking to you from your POV". And don't try too hard either! That's desperate and fails
So the next time they see you, say it's a conference or a seminar, you aren't supposed to show up with the same stuff the next day. That's a huge no no. Well it happens a lot, but I think it's a cardinal failure. It's not a fashion show, it's just to show that I respect my audience and attend to them accordingly. Listen, my talks won't be hindered by people thinking "who the hell is this guy" or "he says but doesn't look the part".
It's easy, but you have to put on an effort. You strengthen the feeling from that to suit the occasion, if no particular occasion, just dress like you feel.
I just don't understand why people, I mean men, are like yeah whatever. It is saying that I don't care how I look. No one says it's a fashion show, no one says you have to have a certain body type. But if nothing on you matches, if you don't dress on occasion, I mean to me that's like forgetting to shower. So why not just skip that one as well if it doesn't matter? It is about being polite and showing respect to whoever you are going to. It is to make the event or situation pleasant and it is about feeling good yourself. So put down the money and if you don't know what to get, ask from people who know. There aren't many things that are mandatory in life, but if you aren't willing to make people feel comfortable and pleasant when they deal with you, I mean why not just show some effort?

Well, I'm not a diplomat in any sense, so I don't tailor my attire and behaviour to fit the situation.
I also don't wear a jacket, as I'm quite slim and most of them look on me like on a broom, so all I need are some shirts, some pants and some ties. Even ties are optional, as I do not have to talk to people outside my deprtment much.
My pants are black in the winter and grey in the summer; these are pretty neutral colours and I don't have to think much about them. I just put the pair I'm currently wearing on.
Right now I have 7 dress shirts with long sleeves to wear in the winter:
a) pale cyan
b) pale dirty yellow
c) white with very thin blue stripes
d) white with pencil-thin pastel blue and violet stripes
e) light grey with some hair-thin dark grey stripes
f) pale yellow with hair-thin brown and maroon squares
g) and another light grey with different dark grey stripes.
I'm too lazy to remember what short-sleeved dress shirts I wear in the summer.
As I can dress casual on Fridays, I just pick four shirts every week to iron.
The hardest part is picking a tie. I have too many ties.
Luckily, I have some combinations I can stick to.
I have a cyan tie for shirt a, a very dark violet tie for d, and a tarnished gold and pastel dark pink tie for f. The other yellow shirt is new, so I haven't found a perfect tie for it yet, and when I put on a grey shirt, it's time to experiment.
I find this approach much easier than carefully picking a combination every day depending on who I am going to meet. As I've said, I don't have any diplomatic qualities and prefer when people listen to what I say and not how I say it.

I have about 30-40 dress shirts. Closet space will be teh most important thing I'll be looking for in a new place when I have to move

I hate shopping for clothes. I do it maybe twice a year, and just a quick in and out. I've been wearing jeans and t-shirts for most of my adult life, I don't feel comfortable in anything else.
Asking parents for money for clothes would be off limits for me. Don't be a *****. You're gainfully employed. Put it on your credit card and take responsibility for your own needs, as you see them.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
