11 suspected vandals arrested on 7th night of unrest across Denmark

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - A wave of vandalism continued across Denmark for a seventh consecutive night, officials said Sunday.

Eleven people were arrested on suspicion of vandalizing and torching schools, cars and garbage containers, with 25 small fires burning overnight, police said. The unrest - largely in immigrant neighborhoods - has spread through Copenhagen and across Denmark.

Police are unsure what triggered the unrest but some say youths from Denmark's immigrant communities were protesting against perceived police harassment - anger apparently aggravated by the publication Wednesday of a cartoon lampooning the Prophet Muhammad.

Most of the unrest was reported in Copenhagen, particularly in the southwest, with four arrests and 14 fires in the capital alone, police spokesman Jan Marker said.

Part of a school in Tingbjerg in Copenhagen was damaged by flames that tore through staff rooms and other administrative offices.

"But the general picture is that it looks calmer," Marker said. "It's not as bad as the previous night. It could be because of the arrests we've made."

On Wednesday, more than a dozen Danish newspapers reprinted a cartoon that had sparked protests in Muslim countries two years ago in a gesture of solidarity after police revealed an alleged plot to kill the cartoonist.

It is difficult to find an article that would tell us what exactly is going on.

My guess is that muslim immigrants are rioting (as seen in France). It's quite idiotic how the press formulate the reports in order to be politically correct.

I have previously mocked Danes for their immigration policy and various other things. Well, if the riots happen to be what I think they are, I fully support expelling all involved.

I've read about the riots since they began now, most articles are in Danish. Little outside it seems, at least from the sources I use. In short, the muslim youth have begun acting like their French counterparts. Schools are set by fire by 13 year olds. Most rioters are below 18. Muslim spokepersons blame the renewed printing of the caricatures, but the riots started a few days before that. It seems the Muslims don't believe that the islamists that was arrested for planning to kill one of the artists of the caricatures, was planning it at all. They demand they are freed and not expelled. Also, Muslim spokepersons have used thinly veiled threats that the youth won't stop before the government back down, saying they can't promise that the youth will act reasonable as long as the governement continue the alleged mistreatment.

The English press is all "it is not yet known who is rioting" and that the riots are in "mostly immigrant" neighbourhoods. It's been a week, tell it like it is already!

I can't say I admire the Danish laws that allow expelling folks without a trial but damn, how about peaceful protests or something?

I don't know if immigrants in Denmark are aware that they've done a great job of shooting themselves in the feet.

The problem is, that a trial would require the police to reveal working methods and sources. It's a difficult case, as you have to balance between an open trial as we are used to in open societies, and the possible spoiling of the police's work on preventing terrorism.

Closed (to public) trials are OK. I'm not thinking OJ style soap operas here, just someone professional as a check on policemen, and an opportunity to have a lawyer and appeal.

On that, I agree. Those rioters, otoh, can be thrown out anytime for my sake.

Yeah, them being youth is simply no excuse whatsoever. Perhaps if I was an unassimilated teenager with raging hormones I'd be throwing molotov cocktails at schools too. But if I was a father of such teenager, I'd lock him in the basement until the rioting is over

So no, you can't say "it's these kids, we can't control them". You can, if you have a basement.

Keep in mind that the two men in question are not citizens. They have been granted permission to stay, by administrative decision. Consequently, their permission to stay can be revoked administratively since their presence here is no longer wanted.

And yes, the fires and rioting started last Sunday, before the plotters were arrested - which happened Tuesday morning. Some types will just grab at any excuse for raising hell in the streets.

While they might not be citizens, they have lived in Denmark for some years and one of them are married to a Danish convert, so I think they have some rights, haven't they? For me, they could just be thrown out, but then again we have certain rules we have to follow in a civilized country, whatever our private preferences.

Why worry about eviction? Just hand them over to your American friends to torture.

Yes, it is second/third generation Muslim immigrants. And you are quite correct that it is ridiculous that the news article fails to mention that central fact.

There seem to have been a large amount of "It is because they have been treated poorly" etc. in the media. So they can't help it if they feel like burning down schools etc.

On this subject I strongly support our prime minister's speech today where he said that there is plenty of jobs and education available (it is true that the marked is screaming for workers, and for example college edication is free in Denmark), and in any case they are responsible for their own action (This is very true).

I think all the perpetrators should be put onto an isolated island, for at least a few years . I wonder if Australia is still accepting...

I still can't get why burning down kindergartens and schools can help them in any way. If they wanted to become a respected and included part of the society, why destroy the very things that can accomplish that?

That's how riots are, Nikolai. Stupid people burning and looting where they live.
