My slang terms were picked up entirely from Durham and Derby.

I lived in Derby 1993-1998, and Durham 1998-2001.

Then UK took my visa away and I sodded off back to the US in good measure

What was in Derby that would be interesting to a foreigner back then? Certainly not the university! Hope you have fond memories of the Blessington Carriage and maybe the Bluenote too. A lot has changed since then though.

Also, while I lived in Derby and had freedom to actually wander at leisure, I was 13 and younger, so I didn't have much interest in night clubs and bars. Once I got to boarding school there was enough to keep me amused in school without going to Derby, though I do know some girls used to sneak out to go clubbing with fake IDs and smuggle ProPlus pills into night clubs while pretending they were ecstasy tablets.

I don't remember that specifically. The visa was a student's visa and my studies were over, so it was time to leave. I spent the following summer in the US and then went back to China for a year to brush up on my Mandarin.

I remember one thing about that time well. I was halfway through writing Joe at the time.
