      112 has been the phone number of firefighters in Germany for ages, by the way in West and East Germany alike. It might thus even outdate both countries (not sure, though). It's always been

      110 - police
      112 - firefighters
      115 - ambulance

      115 was dropped (not sure if it still works, though) and was merged into 112, forming a common emergency call. 110 (police) still works. There's even a TV series called "Police call 110", which is originated in the GDR and was continued by German TV after the re-unification.

                  The problem with 911 is this:

                  You work for a company that uses '9' for the outside line (like 90% of companies). You are going to dial:
                  1-555-555-5555

                  You hit;
                  9,1,1,555,555,5555
                  accidentally hitting the 1 twice for whatever reason.

                  You hear
                  'Hello 911, what is your emergency?'

                  Oops...

                  112 wouldn't be any better in the US (as many calls are 1-blahblahblah- and so any (212) calls, for example, would be sometimes accidentally dialed as 112. Better would be 1112 I think, or 101 (no first digit repetition).

                    This is why we need to preserve the right to bear arms and other assault rifles, so that we don't need the middlemen with obscure phone numbers to protect our kids, elderly, and business transactions.

                        we have 100 for police, 166 for ambulance, 199 for fire dept.
                        surprisingly there is no service using 133

                                according to a news story on greek newspaper i just found, only 22% of europeans are aware of the existence of 112. greece is at the bottom of the list with 4% but also italy and britain (6%) are very low as well
