      • Even Nippon --> Japan makes more sense.
        It does?

        • Because Japan has All Nippon Airways, ANA. Duh!

                Absolutely!

"Japan" is nothing more than the English mispronunciation of the Portuguese borrowing of the Malay garbling of the Chinese mangling of the original "Nippon".

                Simple!
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                • To make matters worse, IIRC the word Nippon is actually pronounced more like "Knee-Hon". Wouldn't it be nice if foreign words were spelled out phonetically in English?

                  • No. 日本 can be pronounced as either Nihon or Nippon. The "Nippon" pronunciation was more common in the WWII era, but "Nihon" dominates now. Both are spelled out phonetically in English.
