Toyota passed GM in world wide sales and is already number 1.

That is what I thought. DanS correctly pointed out that this was about U.S. sales and that is a different subject. Equally, if not more so, sad for the U.S. auto industry.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
I wonder who are the marketing geniuses working at GM and Ford. Gasoline is over $100 a barrel and they still run these advertisements for enormous trucks that get 15-20mpg. Their ads almost always use stupid elements like country music and being perceived as tough in order play off redneck masculinity. Yet, it's pretty obvious that there are a lot of people in the US would not like to spend over $50 for a gas guzzling piece of yankee-doodle-****-that-breaks-down-every-thousand-miles.
Considering they still sell craploads of trucks, it's not that bad a strategy. It's their passenger car sales that hurt them.
Ford sold 690,589 F-Series trucks in 2007 (that's 1/3 of their entire US sales), and Chevy sold 618,257 Silverados.

Quality wise the domestics are pretty good. The problem is the management only wants to do what they've always done; namely build large cars & trucks. Also cost cutting has meant that a lot of the interior bits look rather tacky with all that cheap shiny plastic.

And no doubt at least some of that is left over reputation - even if Detroit really is making better cars, it will take time to convince people of it (like me - I grew up during a period where Detroit = crap, period).
They've got their work cut out for them.

Very very true.
I grew up in the era where Japan = extreme crap.
It took many years after their cars were better before I'd believe it.

How long do you estimate before the Japanese buy up the shattered wreckage of the US car Industry for pennies on the dollar and bring sane management?
