Nanites are for nerds. Real men would use a genetically engineered bacterium.

Yeah, more than one just means you're too needy.

You can check out Orion's Arm, an extremely cool project for transhumanist sci-fi. They have picotech and two more. From the site:

picotech - technology that works on the picometer scale - sculpting atoms, creating new forms of atomic and subatomic matter, interacting with quantum particles and fields.

femtotech - technology on the femtometer (one thousandth of a trillionth of a meter) scale. Engineering and sculpting subatomic particles, including creating quantum particles and quantum states that do not normally occur in nature.

attotech - technology on the attometer scale (one thousandth of a femtometre). Attotech enables the packing of enormous densities of information even within a subatomic particle. Such nodes however require an enormous sustaining and maintaining superstructure to deal with power generation, input and output, heat emission, and so on.

I don't see how anyone could do significant engineering below the atomic scale though, there's a reason we don't see these sorts of particles in nature, they're unstable.
