You should really visit the Alhambra in Granada, but then again, if your dad is bad at planning... You'd have to buy tickets beforehand online or at the BBVA bank (IIRC) for a specific date, otherwise it's almost impossible to get in (=wait in a line for hours, then don't get a ticket)!!
There's many awesome places, really hard to tell what to see.
If you stay in Andalusia, definitely visit Seville with the cathedral, the alcazar, the torre de oro, plaza españa (the palace of Naboo in Star Wars), its parks, all at good walking distance (OK, a really good walk).
Other classic tourist destinations in Andalusia are Córdoba (more to the north), Ronda, and Cádiz, also Thorgal's hometown Tarifa with the castle (from where you can get a ferry to Morocco). Personally I love the beach of Bolonia between Cádiz and Tarifa - that is, if you're into Roman ruins, it's interesting.
If you fly back from Madrid, try to visit Toledo on your way north from Andalusia."The world is too small in Vorarlberg". Austrian ex-vice-chancellor Hubert Gorbach in a letter to Alistar [sic] Darling, looking for a job...
"Let me break this down for you, fresh from algebra II. A 95% chance to win 5 times means a (95*5) chance to win = 475% chance to win." Wiglaf, Court jester or hayseed, you judge.
