            Ailing Suharto rallies after treatment

Doctors say the health of Indonesia's former dictator Suharto has improved, a day after they warned he was in a critical condition with a weakening heart and kidneys.

Suharto, 86, fell ill early last week at the home he has rarely left since mass protests and economic turmoil ended his 32-year rule of Indonesia in 1998.

"There have been many good signs showing that his condition is improving," Marjo Soebiandono, who heads the presidential team of doctors, said yesterday.

Suharto's blood pressure was improving and he could show his emotions, such as by smiling, although he could not speak and remained weak, he said.

Asked whether the critical phase was over, Dr Soebiandono said: "We cannot say that yet, butit is about 60per cent" over.

Up to 40 specialists assembled to treat the former strongman, who was toppled by a pro-democracy uprising during the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis.

"We have conducted an evaluation of his conditions, but we will only make public some of the results," said Djoko Raharjo, who heads the Pertamina Hospital where Suharto has been treated.

A press release read out by another doctor at the hospital advised that Suharto's heart and lungs had improved and that liquid retention in his body was decreasing.

Suharto was put on haemodialysis after his blood pressure rose during the day. He had been admitted to hospital with symptoms of anaemia and low blood pressure.

Doctors have said the ex-president is suffering problems with his heart valves, which would require an operation involving his pacemaker, although they have not indicated when this would take place.

Suharto has been in and out of hospital for various ailments in recent years, including at least two strokes and stomach problems. He is said to have suffered permanent brain damage and some speech loss from his ailments, but during recent Islamic holidays he received a stream of high-profile guests and he gave a rare media interview in November.

He has since (abdicating power) lived quietly in a villa on Jalan Cendana, a leafy street in central Jakarta, feeding his chickens and playing with grandchildren.

Edmund Hillary has now shuffled off this mortal coil.
If at first you don't succeed, take the bloody hint and give up.

I thought you might like that if you weren't aware of it.
I've used it in the past and it's a great resourse.
