            Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Dennis Lehane, F Paul Wilson, Philip José Farmer, Roger Zelazny, George RR Martin, Walter Jon Williams, David Drake (more for his military scifi than his fantasy), John Le Carré (old George Smiley books, haven't read his more recent efforts).
