I look at Christmas as my opportunity to pay back my family (mostly my parents) for the massive debt I've accrued over the course of my life. They fed, clothed and sheltered me for 17 years, helped with college, and slipped me cash whenever I was busted. For this, they know that I am forever grateful, but they would never accept any sort of repayment. But at Christmas, I can buy them nice gifts that they would never buy themselves and they can't say no. Last year they got a computer. This year, it was going to be a TV to replace their 28" tube TV from 1982, but they beat me to the punch (I was shocked, they're very frugal). It's also my excuse to help out my grandmother, who is living on a fixed income, but is too proud to ask for help. She generally gets gift cards to Target so she can get groceries, household goods, etc. -- stuff she needs anyway.

I'm done shopping, by the way.

I completely agree...I only buy presents for very close family members and everyone else agreed to do likewise - because it is a complete waste of money for all concerned. The only people who benefit are the people who sell the crap.

There is a knock-on effect through the economy. If no-one bought each other anything at all, more people than just shop owners would feel it.

That's fine, if other idiots don't mind personally bankrolling the economy, that is fine by me

sadly the two heathens i live with would disappoint me in that respect.

Well that sounds stupid-- Since I would only send presents to people that I actually have a good relationship with, its easy enough to discuss the matter.

In one of my circles of friends we have 6 couples, all with kids. We all decided NOT to give any gifts to each other or each others kids and it was a relief for everyone. Instead we all pitch in and help a needy family.

But talk to people-- If you can't speak with someone enough to discuss whether you should exchange gifts . . . why exactly are you sending them a gift anyway?

got my christmas shopping done today. Though for some reason Walmart does not even sell liquor. Even in Las Vegas. Yes I am getting someone liquor for a present. He's impossible to shop for, and liquor is a good enough gift.

I still need to get xmas cards out. Hopefully they get there in time if I send them out tomorrow. I really should send them out earlier...

And wrapping will be done tomorrow night. Waiting till the last minute as usual.

I am the absolute worst at wrapping presents. I wish I was gay so I could make the wrapping look nice and neat, but I lack any sense of style or ability to make things look pretty.
