United Nations extends U.S. forces in Iraq for year

If the UN went poof, they would be better off how?
Nations of conscience may be more free to act w/o being hobbled/opposed by a UN consisting of tyrants and petty dictators. Whether they would or not may be another debate but the present "World Government" is little better than it's predecessor. If you look to the UN for your security you may as well put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.
Let the UN (through it's myriad of NGO's) innoculate babies. It seems to be the only thing they do well.

Whoa this thread is full of ignorant morons. The security council is not the same thing as the UN.
The General Assembly resolutions would represent authentic UN policy but the security council is just pwned by the USA itself. Just look at the member states in that council.

Was I included in the slur?

I do find it interesting that the guy who thought so felt the need to say this via a DL.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

I don't recall anyone saying they were the same thing. Only morons presume...
Yes, the SC is of course where the real power of the UN rests and it is a farce. I think we agree on that so enough said.
The General Assembly is a hodge podge of nations, many of which are run by tyrants and dictators. These fine people (whom you and I would probably never let in our homes) pontificate on high about the abuses and injustices being committed. Not by them mind you but usually by the nasty westerners. Until the UN actually develops some sort of standards for admission I don't give a **** what the UN General Assembly has to say. *sigh*
I gave credit to the NGO's already. This is the area where the UN is the least "hands on" and amazingly, most successful.
Quote that for truth.

I (and another poster on this site) used to do charity fundraising for a UN agency. I do believe in the idea of the UN.

The U.N., in theory, is an outstanding idea; but it fails in practice.
Arrian, I never said jack**** about the U.N. vs USA vs. activity in Iraq. I said, they're worthless, in a general statement.

The rest of the world remembers that kind of differently. The UN never told you to invade Iraq international inspectors never found anything. You basically said “screw the UN”, and when things got bad you went out and tried to get a little UN involvement. Its silly how you're all disusing the UN, because the UN is doing the only thing it can: Trying to make you clean up you're own mess. I could be cynical and say that the current administration is using the UN to remain in Iraq, but I’m not in the mood.
I’m always curios with what exactly you guys would replace the UN with? We need something like that to at least pretend there is a semblance of international law in place.
(Just to clarify, I don't believe the US invasion of Iraq had anything to do with the UN.)
