United Nations extends U.S. forces in Iraq for year
Uh, this was made because of request from Iraq government. So, its UN and UN Security council (which US is part of and has veto, as pointed already) that sucks? Or did my sarcasm detector fail
You do know that the US sits on the Security Council, right?
And you do know we have veto power over any UNSC action, right?
So you do understand that this means we voted in favor of the Security Council resolution, right? And that we could have stopped it if we wanted to, but we chose not to, right?
The US behaving responsibly
I think Sloww's point, and this is just an educated guess, is that it's rediculous that the UN had a vote on this when it has no control over what is basically the U.S. Military.
So what's yours? Answer both of the questions -- not for me, but for yourself.
Fair question, I suppose. My criteria is that our endgame minimize loss of life (I regard Iraqi civilian and US military life as equally valuable). An immediate withdrawal will not do that; a slow, careful, phased withdrawal would; a robust, ongoing US presence would do so even more, as the Surge has shown. Unfortunately, we don't have enough troops for that last option, so that leaves the slow, careful, phased withdrawal -- which, by definition, will require ongoing US presence for a while yet.
This thread has almost as much blah as the UN. The UN passes a resolution because it means nothing. Nothing. They pass them because it means nothing, and for no other reason besides the getting of this very sort of consideration. If the countries that voted for them had to back up their votes with blood and gold, you would see an organization resolving to dissolve, a resolution finally with a valid point. They have niether balls nor integrity. In this they carry on the work of the League of Nations, or any other body with the purpose on the part of self centered individual nations involved whose corruption is their defining charactaristic, to gather to themselves as much as they can take from others, particularly those who have worked to achieve the greatness they lack.
Blah!

I have little use for the UN Sloww but you can't blame them for the cluster**** you guys find yourself in. This problem is the US's making.
I see helicopters leaving the embassy roof, it's just a matter of how long you delay the inevitable departure.

Even when they purportedly act on the UN's behalf?
The rest of the world remembers that kind of differently. The UN never told you to invade Iraq international inspectors never found anything. You basically said “screw the UN”, and when things got bad you went out and tried to get a little UN involvement. Its silly how you're all disusing the UN, because the UN is doing the only thing it can: Trying to make you clean up you're own mess. I could be cynical and say that the current administration is using the UN to remain in Iraq, but I’m not in the mood.
I’m always curios with what exactly you guys would replace the UN with? We need something like that to at least pretend there is a semblance of international law in place.

ask the Cambodians, the Rwandans and the people in Darfur what they think of the "pretenses".
Oh yeah, we can't ask them.

If the UN went poof, they would be better off how?

International law is a joke and not the primary function of the UN.

The world is a better place if people pretend international law matters. So stop killing kittys by making sense!
