He's right, Elok. You'd be better off going forgetting widows and going with bride burning, which is a mere subcategory of dowry murder. Those are just as delightfully barbaric, but much more common.

To understand that, you need to understand the origins of Hindu civilization...

              I just thought about this:

Furthermore, Sati was, of course, caused by muslims:
Argument that sati was an act of self defence
                From Wiki:
Hindu scholars such as Prabhat Varun have tried to show that Sati was not part of Hindu doctrine at all, but a practice of voluntary immolation by Hindu women as a means to avoid humiliation and stigma associated with rape and molestation during periods of Muslim rule in India.

                Bloody muslims.

And to not blame the Muslims of that time.

Do you think that others would have behaved differently if they were completely and utterly convinced that their "God" had given them the permission to rape women who were taken as POWs, and distributed as part of the booty? Humans are humans, as were these people. They acted the same way anyone else would have, in their position, given the set of ideas (Islam) that had been put in their brains.

It was often a collective decision.

When the women in a besieged fort knew that their time was up, the entire group formed a huge fire and jumped in.

The Western mind can never understand why your people so willingly commit suicide for one. But to set yourself on fire is just ****ing bazaar dude. There is nothing you can say that will make us understand.

                              I know, Kid.

The concept of "honour" is an alien one to some.

The oddest part is that the "orthodox" and "rigid" tradition does not, in fact, condone or even reference Sati. So it's not a case of there being a mishmash of quotes, like in the Quran WRT Jihad, with a few, much-quoted goody-goody ones, and most of them absolutely abominable. In this case, there isn't a single reference, anywhere. None. Zilch. Nada. It appears that they were unaware that such a thing even existed.

Of course, these things not being the domain of knowledge or expertise of scripture anyway, the entire "you quote I quote" debate is a pointless one, but still, it does add perspective to the whole thing.

Good thing for us or we might find ourselves burned to death.

At any rate most of the women were murdered. It wasn't voluntary in most cases. And it definitely wasn't because of the Muslims.
