        My mum worked on a sliding scale of reaction for my grades:

        A+ = pride
        A = approval
        A- = less approval
        B's = raised eyebrow of "you can do better"
        C's = "What the hell? Work harder"
        anything below = I'd be safer working with unusually aggressive lions while wearing a suit made from juicy succulent ham than having to tell my mum my grade.

        All this has made me a neurotic Ph.D. student driven by my own fear of failure and unable to relate to any success outside of a standardises system of marking.
        Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

          I wish I could remeber what TV show had the gem piece of dialogue:

          Kid #1: If he ever brought home a "B," his dad would beat him.
          Kid #2: Really?! If I ever brought home a "B," my dad would buy me a bicycle!

            Reward success or punish failure? Sometimes, punish success because its not successful enough.

                        Whether a college student is a child or not really depends on the age of the eye of the beholder and the degree of the dimentia thereof.

                        That's why they look for foriegners in the first place, so they don't have to support the family and her hubby's chuba habit.

                            Also, when I was at Durham Uni, I would have KILLED to get an 80.

                            To give a sense of perspective, most of my grades were in the 60s and I got a 2:i (the equivalent of a B or B+ in the UK system).

                            70s were As.
