Australia signs up to Kyoto

Leaving the US as the only developed nation outside the pact...

While everyone agrees that Kyoto is not perfect by any means, if countries like the US selfishly can’t even ratify a crucial treaty on climate change – what chance do we have of persuading China and India to do the same?

America should take heed of one of its own companies, GM – a company haemorrhaging billions because it refused to move with the times and embrace green technology…

Who here still refuses to believe that climate change is accelerating and if major steps aren’t taken now to drastically curb greenhouse gas emissions, we are headed for a global catastrophe?

Don't be silly Asher. There is an immediate 20% reduction in emmissions simply by signing. This of course is wasted by all the hot air used to condemn the US.

Yes, America’s climate policy is immoral. But that doesn’t make China’s rapacious coal plant building moral. The N.Y. Times has published the sobering numbers, which bear repeating:

The country built 114,000 megawatts of fossil-fuel-based generating capacity last year alone, almost all coal-fired, and is on course to complete 95,000 megawatts more this year.

For comparison, Britain has 75,000 megawatts in operation, built over a span of decades.

China is now the main reason the world is recarbonizing — the carbon content of the average unit of energy produced has stopped its multi-decade decline, as noted. Yes, America is still responsible for a great deal more cumulative emissions, which is what drive concentrations, and China is doing Much of its dirty manufacturing for U.S. consumers (never said our hands were clean).

But China seems to have adopted a policy of build as many coal plants as is humanly possible until they are forced to stop — or, I suspect, until they get a deal that pays the country to shut them down (much as they have gamed the clean development mechanism under Kyoto).

Yes, China is the scourge of the planet – but then all they have to do with almost complete justification is point to the US’ non-ratification of Kyoto…

As for Canada, it’s right next to the US so any incentive to actually have the balls to do anything about a legally-binding treaty has obviously swiftly evaporated. Who can blame ‘em…

I would think that results matter a whole lot more than promises. The US is not willing to actually do what Kyoto says. Other countries aren't either, but are willing to sign it (knowing that the US and China won't, and thus they're safe from criticism).

I'm in favor of reducing emissions and other measures to reduce our environmental impact. I hope whatever administration comes to power after the next election decides to go that route. It's something that will impact my vote in said election.

As for global catastrophe... unclear, but the signs are worrisome, and warrant action in conjunction with further study.

Kyoto doesn't work Mobius, you should be critical of all the other coutries that did sign it and now have no intention of following it (if they ever did).

Signing treaties for the sake of signing treaties is stupid.
