The population of Europe is declining. The population of American prisons is increasing. Coincidence? I think not.

Nah, it was probably some ex-FSB defector who earned his daily bread (or caviar) smuggling dangerous substances who mishandled one of the packages and got himself contaminated.
Well, all right, we did poison him. But hey, he was a citizen of Russia.

I do not deny that the elections were falsified, but Chechen results probably weren't. They're just that disciplined. Seriously. Pity we can't nuke the whole place without international repercussions. Their current chieftain is really annoying.

Im confused by the use of the word rendition in the first few posts. As Ive seen it used, rendition usually refers to sending an individual FROM US jurisdiction, to be held by another state. The controversy here has arisen due to those OTHER states that to which folks have been sent, which often use torture, and the accusation that US authorities were aware of, or even intended the use of torture on these individuals. The most prominent case, that of a Syrian-Canadian, the individual was originally detained on US soil (at JFK airport) and in the case of the gentleman detained in Macedonia, that was with the consent of the govt of Macedonia, IIUC. In regard to individuals seized in Europe, my understanding is that US authorities felt they were acting with local consent, although there was some question as to whether the locals (from the intell agencies) who gave the consent had the right to do so.

In Afghanistan of course, we were in a state of war.

So if we are really stating the right to seize individuals in another country which we are at peace with, without that countrys assent, it sounds like a novum in terms of recent actions.

ah, on reading the Times article, the lawyer was merely stating old US law, not stating that this was actually the policy that would be followed in an ordinary case. The most recent legal precedent was in regard to drug smugglers in Mexico, where the Mexican govt in all likelihood did not raise a fuss. The Justice dept would presumably consult with the Dept of State, which would weigh international questions.

the legal question here, was (as Alinestra pointed out) would the nature of the seizure create a remedy in a US court. Not a question of international law at all, IIUC.

wezil i am aware kidnapping is illegal. The law as stated says it is l;egal to kidnap some one wanted on charges inthe us. For the record i dotn care bout dog either. Thats what he did according to past threads I guess my question is who decides which kidnappings arent crimminal ..in other countries? If the us will stick out the neck for white collar crimminals and not hunt down that kidnapper or turn himover why this situation with dog and pick him up and turn him over?
When you find yourself arguing with an idiot, you might want to rethink who the idiot really is.

MrsT - The US will decide which kidnappings are legal and which ones aren't (as they always do). The Italians are still waiting for US govenment agents to stand trial for a "rendition" (re - kidnapping) done in their country. The US of course has no intention of turning them over. It's the way you guys do business.

edit - btw, wrt to the Eichmann case - The fact the Israeli agents had to sneak him out of Argentina speaks loudly to the legality of the mission under Argentine law.

The CIA was granted permission to use rendition in a presidential directive that dates to the Clinton administration, although very few uses were documented during that time.
