Those bastards at the airport will rape you if they are not put on some sort of leash. No matter how long your articles are and no matter how much you bold the parts you think are so damning, the fact remains that George Bush knows when to stop spending that we just don't need anymore. If it were not for the terrorists he would be known as the most fiscally responsible president of the last ten years.

It is possible that we have temporarily won the war on terrorism. I'd say the threat to the U.S. is over for the time being. Although most of that reason is because they prefer to focus on us in Iraq which is a lot closer. If we weren't in Iraq, there might be more motivation to come over here to bomb. hard to say for sure.

Our ports remain our most vunerable entryway into the U.S., and not nearly enough has been done to secure them. If I were a terrorist with a WMD, I'd put it aboard a container and send it by ship to the U.S. Then I could either set my WMD off in the harbor, or offload it and send it by train to a more desirable target.

Bush says, eh, don't worry about it. I worry.

Our police, firefighters and EMTs still can't talk to each other on their radios six years after this inablity lead to hundreds of unnecessary deaths when the World Trade Center collapsed.

That's not what the programs on the chopping block were funding if you had read the article you posted.

The department wanted to provide $3.2billion to help states and cities protect against terrorist attacks in 2009, but the White House said it would ask Congress for less than half - $1.4billion, according to a Monday document. The plan calls for outright elimination of programs for port security, transit security and local emergency management operations in the next budget year.

Port security is where we need security, NOT the airports.

Why have efforts to secure our ports been abandoned?

Because a piss poor pathetic job has been done of it, mostly the fault of the administration for not setting it as a priority.

So what do they do after they failed pathetically? Say it is a non issue and abandon it!

It takes a brave man to say "Ooops I ####ed up big time, so thats no longer a priority!"

Bush is still angry that he was foiled over Dubai.

The knee jerk reaction by government to things like 9/11, demanded by the people, is to spend. Efficiency be damned, just throw money at it. Later when the hysteria has settled you can go back and trim the excesses and in this case paranoia inspired projects that really don't do much good.

Of course the states are asking for more, the question is do they need more.

We should apply this to every government program.

While very popular in the states and among lawmakers who take credit for getting counterterrorism dollars to their districts, some of the grants have been criticized as wasteful or excessive.

$345,000 for crashproof barriers and 60 closed-circuit cameras to monitor the University of Arkansas Razorback stadium, which local officials think could be a terrorist target.

$5million for the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology to buy a nearly deserted town to use for counterterrorism training.

$70,000 for Huntsville, Ala., to create a fallout shelter in an abandoned mine where 20,000 people could take cover underground.

Several South Florida fire departments have used Homeland Security grants to beef up their gyms. Pompano Beach, Fla., spent $220,000 on fitness equipment for a wellness program, training and physical exams.

I'd cut those programs as well if this is the kind of crap they fund.

That doesn't sound like waste provided we use it. Though we could have just used eminent domain
