Why were people talking about the health care in Alberta at all?

It's a common thing out east to ***** about how Alberta, with its conservative government, has crap health care compared to the idyllic Ontario.

(Disclaimer: I've been unable to find a GP at all in Toronto)

It is not a system to be envied.

I didn't even know they had health care up there. I always figured they just chucked a wounded man in the marshes and let the beavers lick his sores.

Moderately interesting stats -- I wonder could the younger Calgary demographic have something to do with it (ie do they adjust at all for the age of the hospital population)?

When my wife worked intensive care (whether Alberta, Newfoundland or Texas) about half the beds in her unit were occupied by people who were going to die there. There is really only so much that can be done for the 90 year old in heart failure after all and such a death should not be seen as an indictment of a particular hospital or unit

Terminally ill people are not included in the study.

The study might have accounted for ALL of the various factors that can account for differences in death rates in hospitals-- I don't know-- I didn't look at their methodology

I just know that a death may say nothing at all about the quality of care-- Heck a top-flight hospital might even have a higher incidence of death if it employs some some top-flight specialists that use cutting edge procdures to attempt to save patients ( and give a chance to people that would otherwise be doomed)
