That politics has always and always will make strange bedfellows?

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Mike Moore's strange bedfellows are Rosey Palm and her 5 sisters.

His base is really dumb, and wants to turn the GOP into a permanent electoral minority.

Thankfully we don't have to worry about that.
Common wisdom says that if he runs, he'll be pretty competitive. And since Cochran's running for re-election, it's basically now or never...

As opposed to what? New Jersey? We all know what fine upstanding people are there.

I don't think you know who he's talking about. Not disagreeing with your assesment though, I didn't really like him as AG.

Competative doesn't mean winning. IMO, whoever Barbour appoints has the lock on the seat. You also have to consider how long its been since we actually sent a Dem to the Senate.

Being "upstanding" and being intelligent are two different things. Unfortunately in Texas, you have neither .

Gene Taylor's district is significantly more Republican than MS IIRC. It's doable given the environment. Given how hyped he is, I'd say that Moore has just under even chances against Pickering. And about even against Wicker.

I'd add that incumbents are generally pretty well off in small, poor states regardless of party (because seniority brings teh pork - and Lott and Cochran are pretty damn senior).

Talk if you ever know what you're talking about. The effort to stay quiet will probably make you explode.

I believe I've won this contest, Tex.

Hell, I didn't even have to mention Dubya... oh wait, I just did .

The 4th Congressional District of MS has elected 7 Republicans since 1847. Looks like a RNC stronghold in the state to me.

You're preaching to the choir nence the reason I'm giving the edge to the person Barbour appoints.

As for Moore being hyped, I'm going to have to ask by who? Certainly not by the local media yet.

It gave Bush 68.23% of the vote in 2004. That was higher than any other district in MS. It's, by definition, a Republican stronghold.

You're preaching to the choir nence the reason I'm giving the edge to the person Barbour appoints.
Having 3-11 months of incumbency is quite different from being the Ranking Member of Appropriations or Minority Whip. And being in the Majority (at least until 2012) easily trumps that kind of seniority.

As for Moore being hyped, I'm going to have to ask by who? Certainly not by the local media yet.

To make another point about the situation, MS gave Dems 45% of the total vote for House candidates, and they didn't even bother running a candidate against Pickering (whose district, again, is less Republican than one Taylor carried with 80%).

Lott has read the polls and decided it is better to bow out then to be ignominiously voted out.

He's pretty much unbeatable. He's leaving because the lobbying reform that the new Congress passed takes effect in the beginning of the new year (which would force him to wait another year till becoming a lobbyist), and wants to cash in now.
