Gene Taylor's district is significantly more Republican than MS IIRC. It's doable given the environment. Given how hyped he is, I'd say that Moore has just under even chances against Pickering. And about even against Wicker.Competative doesn't mean winning. IMO, whoever Barbour appoints has the lock on the seat. You also have to consider how long its been since we actually sent a Dem to the Senate.

It gave Bush 68.23% of the vote in 2004. That was higher than any other district in MS. It's, by definition, a Republican stronghold.Looks like a RNC stronghold in the state to me.
Having 3-11 months of incumbency is quite different from being the Ranking Member of Appropriations or Minority Whip.
