Diversity occurs naturally to a small extent. Forcing the issue promotes division and racial nepotism.

The problem, however Cort, is that THEY take pride in them. If you are not one of THEM then you aren't allowed to acknowledge it.

It's like black people calling themselves the N-word, but on a lot subtler level. Or maybe not.

            Wrong. Read up Lewontin's fallacy:

Diversity shouldn't be pushed, it should be allowed to spread naturally. But those who resist that natural diversity should be pushed.

I didn't clarify how hard they should be pushed... or into (off of?) what...

This, to me, is very different from a sense of civil equality across the board.

In the US, people are considered Italian-Americans, African-Americans, Irish-Americans, Polish-Americans and so on, and it seems that they are encouraged to take pride in this identity. What though, for the person that has Italian, African, Irish and Polish roots in equal quantities? Presumably they are just Americans, which is fine, but they get no special badge of pride, despite being highly diverse within themselves.

The goal of 'colour-blindness' is a worthy one, but I don't see how it can be advanced while people have these ethnic labels attached to them.
I agree. Ethnic pride is overrated. It's natural to feel more comfortable with people who belong to your ethnic group, but I don't think it's healthy to promote ethnic group identity. It's a fine line between healthy celebration of culture/ethnicity and racial nationalism.

Pushing ethnic diversity on people who don't want it is authoritarian BS.

                        Inherent differences don't usually exist.
But religious, cultural and historical differences can exist.

40+ years of official 'Brotherhood and Unity' in the SFRY, where it was forbidden to talk about the past or speak of the differences didn't make complex, underlying problems go away.

These are people (except the Albanians) who were all southern slavs sharing a similar language, yet had distinct religious, cultural and historical backgrounds.

Sure, and they should be discussed openly. I get suspicious however when people take those, and declare them to be "inherent".

No. Very few of these people have any power.

History is full of examples were such people had and in some ways still have power.
