Wild guess:
Could it be that people in small communities (which are less likely to be diverse) are more trusting and people in big (crime-ridden) cities are less trusting? Could it be there is correlation but not causation?

Of course the question is, what happens if we introduce an outsider/foreigner into one of these not ethnically diverse societies.
I assume the effect will be the same as you can observe in some small rural bavarian villages.
Without diversity they´re a sworn community. But as soon as you introduce a outsider (for example someone from "te city" who wants to live in this village), this community will immediately try to get rid of him, because he doesn´t fit into their community and is seen as some kind of impurity without these people even try to get known to the outsider.Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I think we should distinguish between communities such as work, where people are interacting with each other, and a residential community, where people don't have to interact.
Working with people from different backgrounds can certainly break down barriers, if people are permitted to get on easily and naturally with each other. I used to work in a very diverse group of colleagues, and everyone, on the whole, got on pretty well. Interestingly though, there was no rigid "diversity policy" which in my view can often get people to see things in terms of what sets them apart, rather than what they have in common.

Perhaps there are other reasons for distrust than racism, and reasons above and beyond the moral character of individuals.

Well that's also us versus them, as in people we know and peo ple we don't know.
You trust your family, friends, co-workers and onwards it goes, until it's people you don't know, it's just people. Like business men, cab drivers and so forth. You don't know them, but they're titled X.
When Texans start trusting librul Frisco people, you know, even though same ethnicity, wait. Why can't they be racist? Since Finns don't trust Russians, are they racist? Xenophobic for sures, but even then, tons of Russians in here, it's the biggest minority. And how much problems they cause? Very very little, so little that could be said "not at all", and we see them all the time, do we distrust them? Not so much. Because we KNOW them.
Same thing happens all the time with all groups, professions, ethnicities and everything.
But oh yes, racism this and that meh meh blah blah racist here racist there, you're all a bunch of racists. And sexists and God will prolly destroy YOUR country because you're also bunch of fags.In da butt.
