The father didn't care, because it was 'genetic disorder', nobody was responsible, let's not bother the girl with that! It's not her fault! She has to learn that life is unfair and she needs to learn dealing with that.
When later the parents divorced, the mother decided to go and see some doctor. It was indeed genetic. But, there was something to do. A specific diet. Only some products were not metabolised the right way. Stay away from these and you'll be ok.
Today, the girl is becoming a nice, slim young lady.
Yes, life is unfair, but I thing the girl learned a different lesson with her mother than with her father: sitting on your ass doing nothing and blaming fate, will certainly not help.
