No, but I had an Iranian teacher who was in the US on political asylum because he is part of the party seeking for democracy in Iran. He was fascinating and gave the most interesting insights on Iran's quest for nuclear weapons and Islamic fanaticism.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move. - Douglas Adams

Same here, although my Iranian professor wasn't exiled and visited his family there fairly often. It was interesting to hear just how strongly his family and friends support pursuing nuclear energy there as a matter of economic development and national prestige, including even those who unequivocally oppose the regime and everything it stands for.

One of my former colleagues at work was the daughter (well, one of the daughters) of one of the high ranking officials in the government of the Shah of Persia.
When the revolution came he sent the children away to europe and she suddenly found herself being forced to live in an appartment in germany.

She still has dual citizenship (german and iranian) and is forced to regularly travel to Iran to retain it, because without iranian citizenship she wouldn´t be able to claim the family heritage (looks like her family went out of the revolution without loosing too much of their wealth)
(and she always travels to iran without her spouse, to avoid problems [for herself as well as for her partner] if it comes to light that she as a muslim woman is in a relationship to a non muslim man).

Dad was in Teheran in 1974 as part of a business development group from the State of Tennessee. That's as close as I have come. His letters from that visit make some very interesting reading.

How open is it both for westerners and Iranians to speak their minds about the government and everything else over there?

I'm starting to think this Iran place is an urban myth. Everyone knows a friend of a friend who's been there but no one has actually seen the place in person.
