Poor girl. Yeah I know you have to be tough and if you are the sensitive, you probably shouldn't be on the internet. The internet is full of *******s.

now I have to be my old cynical insensitive self and read into this. For one thing, I think the mother isn't telling the whole story. Just the fact that her mother says her daughter has ADD makes me think the mother is full of **** and a complete *****. I'm sure she will be sueing for some huge amount of money. It's more likely the girl killed herself because her mother is this way.

But I still feel bad for the girl.

The girl's mother, Tina Meier, said she doesn't think anyone involved intended for her daughter to kill herself.

        ...

Her father said he found a message the next day from Josh, which he said law enforcement authorities have not been able to retrieve. It told the girl she was a bad person and the world would be better without her, he has said.

The bad thing (among the many bad things in this cenario) about this is that it was a ****ing adult that did it.

On the grand scheme of human cruelty this case is barely noticeable.

I don't know. It the "One death is a traged, a million is a statistic" idea. The way one person can die is still cruel.

It floors me that adults -- at least one of whom was a parent -- were involved in this, it really does. WTF kind of adult devotes herself to harrassing teens on the internet?

I think this is an interesting piece. It illustrates how people are jerks even on the internet. It didn't use to be like this. In the mid 90s, even into late 90s, there wasn't much of things kind of thing going on. Sure, it happened, but it wasn't that common. I think all the social shaping the internet has doen reflects the real world sometimes. You know with the linkedin's of the world, basically the social hierarchy is entering the web. THe ranking might have different rules, but there still are people who rule out others.

The crossing between the real life and the internet is ever more ambiguous. We are finally starting to understand that it's not "virtual world" that can be separated from "real life", rather it's just part of life, because soon it'll affect your real life if you are not on the internet.

Now, since the number of access has gone way up, we see tons of jerks as well entering the arena. Usually the people who made fun of other people using the internet back in the days, they were *******s then, and they're *******s now, using the web. They're just re-inventing their ways to bully, when it's not important or doesn't occupy most of us, because why would anyone do that? Completely pointless.

Things like these are bound to happen more. There are tons of forums and places where the idea is to be "outrageous". That is, the less peopel seem to care, the more cool they are. They need to make automatic responses to sad news, and if a forum member is dead, they're supposed to first call it fake, make jokes about it and so forth, until it is confirmed and THEN everyone is sorry.

And that's why stunts like the one FG pulled suck and thats' why he sucks.

If I were one of Megans parents I would think about publishing the RL Address of the other family (which obviously is known to Megans parents) on some well frequented internet sites together with Megans story
