  • well, I do blame the security forces: they stunned him when he was walking away from them, and continued to do so when he was down. One of the policemen kept beating him with this police stick ina completely unproper way (by the end of the stick facing down, like with a knife)
I don't understand why he was kept in this room for 10 h and his mother who was outside was forbidden to contact him - wouldn't it be easier to use his mother to calm him down?

Or maybe not. Some people would then complain that there's too much stunning going on and too little 'talk'. Not to mention 'candy' and 'big friendly hugs'.
Indeed, and others would complain that not enough innocent people are being killed.

An all-round unworkable suggestion, I'm afraid

      • Since I cant be arsed to read all this, my contribution will be short. I'm not surprised at all by this debacle. In my experience, a great many of the Canada customs guys (at the airports mainly) are amongst the worst small-dicked men with delusions of power it has ever been my misfortune to meet. I will also add that despite its intriguing native art and architecture, the international arrivals at the Vancouver airport sucks - badly.

Bull****. Manually restraining someone - even someone armed with a stapler - is pretty obviously safer than stunning them with a million volts of electricity. Especially given the evidence.

Let me use the case this thread was started for. I as of now, I don't believe the man died from the tazering. There is no evidence of that.

How is that obvious? Are you just assuming that the guy is not going to resist once officers get a hold of him?

People have died from nightstick choke holds. Sitting on someone's chest can suffocate them. Footage of someone being beaten with nightsticks can set off more of a storm than someone being tasered (especially if the officers are white and the one being beaten is black).

Now I'm not saying that the officers acted appropriately in this case. But I don't think that tasers are necessarily a bad thing.

And where do you get a million volts from?

                • Wiki and a guesstimate. I'm not sure how long the taser shock lasts. I'm pretty sure I'm not off by more than an order of magnitude, though.

                    • Usually, the higher the voltage, the more effective it is. It may take several seconds to subdue a subject with 100 kV, but only about a second with 1 MV (1,000 kV).

The output voltages without external "load" (which would be the target's body) are claimed to be in the range of 50 kV up to 1000 kV, with the most common being in the 200 to 300 kV range.

                          • That doesn't say what tasers, if any, use 1MV.
