I watch more TV now than I did 5 years ago . Though that's probably due to having a DVR.

You don't actually believe that it is though, do you?
only in exchange for something else
I believe they are saying its in exchange for them coming back to work .

I don't like reality TV much myself. But I do like the Chef Ramsey shows.

Writers guild inks deal with United ArtistsBy Carl DiOrio

STRIKE ZONE: LATEST NEWS AND UPDATES
The WGA and United Artists have announced their much-anticipated interim bargaining agreement.
Details were not disclosed in this announcement, but in a joint release issued Monday the parties said "the comprehensive agreement addresses the issues important to writers, including new media."
The agreement, which comes on the 64th day of the WGA's strike against Hollywood studios, means guild scribes can go back to work on UA film projects. The agreement does not extend to UA parent MGM.
"United Artists has lived up to its name," WGA president Patric Verrone said. "UA and the writers guild came together and negotiated seriously. The end result is that we have a deal that will put people back to work."
UA chief executive Paula Wagner, the longtime producing partner of UA co-owner Tom Cruise, said: "This agreement is important, unique, and makes good business sense for United Artists. In keeping with the philosophy of its original founders, artists who sought to create a studio in which artists and their creative visions could flourish, we are pleased to have reached an agreement with the WGA." Doesn't include MGM, but still this is the first major deal... it's an "interim" deal so we'll see how long it lasts, but I imagine it's a major feather in the cap of the WGA if they can get ONE studio on board - the rest will have to follow pretty quickly if they want to not lose out on prime scripts and prime actors. Assuming the deal is anywhere near what the WGA wanted, anyway.

The Writers Guild of America says it has signed a side deal with United Artists that allows writers to work for the studio, WGA said Monday.
The deal does not include Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, which owns a part interest in UA.
Details of the deal were not disclosed, but it includes issues about compensation for new media play, an issue central to the guild's decision to strike against the producers over the inability of the two sides to come to terms, particularly on compensation for shows with second and third lives online or over mobile media.
WGA has signed another side deal with David Letterman's Worldwide Pants production company that got writers back to work on CBS late night TV shows. UA is a film studio partly by Tom Cruise, so the impact is mostly symbolic. UA was co-founded by a group of four Hollywood artists, including Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, who united out of concern overt the major studios'control over compensation and creative direction.
UA has a TV history, however. It's TV division produced shows back in the 1960's--including Gilligan's Island and The Patty Duke Show.

Maybe not as big a deal as I thought... didn't realize UA was such a small studio nowadays. I guess I hear MGM and translate to "MGM/UA" in my head...

I can honestly say that I didn't see that much difference between Letterman with writers and Conan/Leno without writers. Maybe it's just good for them to write their own material again?
Colbert/Daily Show came down as I typed this. Yay!
