A gap around the lid large enough to leave a ring of light... The lid would fall in.

<------The Ring (The ring 2 is crap)
The japanese version is the best horror movie ever made. But I'm sure the bastardised american version would've scared the **** out of me as well had I seen that first.
Actually The american Ring 2 had almost nothing to do with the japanese original (which was quite good I thought, not nearly as good as Ringu, but watchable) There's also a Ringu 0, but that's not directed by Hideo Nakata and not as good as Ringu and Ringu 2.
Dark Water (jap vers) is also very good. Very creepy and every bit as scary as Ringu IMO.

Jennifer Connely isn't scary...
Any other oriental (or not) thrillers to suggest?
'The Eye' is a decent thriller. Not great, but good enough...
I haven't seen 'A Tale of Two Sisters', but it's on my "to see" list.
'Suffocation' is interesting because it's the first thriller/surrealist drama produced in China. I saw this movie at the Gothenburg Film Festival in 2005, unfortunately I fell asleep after 45 minutes... But what I saw was quite good...
I assume you've seen Buffy the vampire slayer in the american crap remake of Ju-On (The Grudge)?
Severely overrated - albeit mildly entertaining in small doses.
Much like its director, by the way.
Riget 1 was excellent. Riget 2 was just...bad. Too much of everything. It's painfully obvious that von Trier was trying to make his own 'Twin Peaks' and like David Lynch he got lost in the pretentious quagmire of "ooh, look at me I'm soo weird and crazy!"
