Sorry to hear it Dis, but I think you did the right thing. My cat got sick and simply stopped eating and drinking - not even shrimps got more than a lick or two, so there was only one solution unless I should look at her starving to death.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
