I know I'm as happy as a pig in slop. Uh huh.

Well okay, but only if you're drunk and blindfolded.

I am surprised at the criticism aimed at Kuci. Remember, this is a guy who can program a robotic car to search you out and run you over....and no one will ever know who programmed the killer car.

Imagine a world where all cars are driven by computer. You could then make a self-replicating virus to infect all cars and then have every car seek out and try to run over a specific person!

Weak. If I was doing this, I could've won 3 million.

                Congrats! Sounds pretty cool.

And yes, Kuci can and should take good feeling from this and feel a part of the success. It is ok to say 'we' in this case.

I followed a webcast of this last year. I think it was DanS who started the thread. Interesting stuff. Funny how the technology used is pretty old, yet it still took the teams years to do it right.

And it is for military applications, who knows what's next...

In the subway thread, I mentioned that traffic accidents cost the US about $230 billion per annum (2000 estimate), or about 7.6 cents per mile traveled. This is a similar amount to the cost for fuel.

Here's the 2006 file where these figures are given.

To my mind, autonomous vehicles are one of the most important changes coming over the next several years and would justify as a society a huge expenditure in R&D, even though I don't think it will be required.

Am I correct in assuming that the big difference between this race and last is the improved (smaller, higher resolution, more reliable) LIDAR?

I think a big difference is that, but I believe there were a couple improvements on the code side as well, at least.

Can "Boss" drive on the freeway autonomously? How do you judge its robustness? Does it feel unreliable or reliable?
