Hahahah. I hope you didn't mean to have that "always" there.

But anyway I wasn't talking about managerial positions - but investment, the people who own the capital.

        • but a lot of it is because it is seen that the market cannot provide what is deemed to be necessary.
The reason why his statement is laughable is not because it is not for the most part correct, but rather because it is not a rebuttal to my position.

Nothing about that purpose of government has anything to do with what civic responsibility a citizen has with regards to paying taxes.

He's pretty much right about that.

Even a conservative should believe that. The purpose of the government is to address those issues that the market will not provide; things like education, law, and a military are not effectively provided by the market so they are provided by the government (and should be).
Except that they don't, or at least I suspect that some of them pretend they don't in order to **** things up to benefit their rich friends. It's no wonder that politics is so stupid these days.

I don't think any sensible socialist thinks that we should inaugurate the communist society tomorrow, but that certainly doesn't mean that tossers like Blair and Brown aren't utterly deluded or fraudulent.

The only purpose that the government has is to do what we want it to do. There are no other limits.

Most people dislike the idea of their fellow citizens living in squalor, and the other consequences of rampant poverty. And, people generally want to have some security if everything goes pear shaped. Welfare provides that for everyone.
But people know that welfare isn't a good situation for people. They want people to have jobs and to live normal lives. Welfare isn't much of a market correction. It's doesn't fix the problems of capitalism. It's like a pain killer.
