But there is always a military and ideological counterweight (the rest of the world aint a vacuum) and it wouldn't have mattered one bit if the USA existed. Most people wont accept dictatorships unless the alternative is actually worse and resistance will develop. Magnify that, the successful dictatorship will expand and with it the problems of maintaining an empire. I think you severely underestimate tribalism and nationalism, when we left Vietnam SE Asia was supposed to become puppets of China and the USSR. "Communism" has its appeal in the 3rd world because of colonialism, not because its a superior economic system. The colonial powers stole land and put puppet dictators in charge, communism brought the promise of "land reform" - returning stolen land. Thats why the west opposed communism, western assets to extract resources would likely be "nationalized".Comment
